The Ugly First Draft

Matthew 18:21

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Episode 24: How good are you at weeding?

This episode begins with the familiar hope that arrives every spring or summer—the promise that this will finally be the year we become gardeners. But as enthusiasm fades and weeds inevitably take over, the simple act of tending a garden becomes a powerful metaphor for the life of the soul.

Bitterness or resentment, like a weed, can lie hidden beneath the surface until a memory, a name, or a place causes it to shoot up again and take over the landscape of our hearts. In this episode we explore the honest work of forgiveness—naming our hurts, pulling up the roots of resentment, and planting seeds of mercy in their place. Because forgiveness, much like weeding, is rarely a one-time task. It is a practice we return to again and again so that grace, not bitterness, has room to grow.
